Hiking past the Plankensteinalm, 1541 m

The marked hiking trail leads from the Gosau Vordertal through the woods and along forest streets to the Plankensteinalm, a journey of two and a half hours.

For a couple of years now the Gosauer Bummelzug ( a tractor with a wagon) has been bringing guests up to the huts. The forest street to the Plankensteinalm is known as a popular route for mountain bikers too.

Situated on a plateau rests the widest area of alpine pastures of Gosau.
Plenty of huts can be found there and a few of them are even open to the public. A small pond is the watering place for the horses and cows which spend their summers there. The alpine pasture is surrounded by a nice tree population, also containing larchs which are seldom to spy in Gosau.

When you cross the alpine grounds in the direction of the northeast you will come to a small path which is not signed. It leads to the „Geisswand“ and the „Wilderersitz“. Here you will come across walls of rock which mark the end of the pasture. Your view from here will show the Hallstättersee, Hallstatt, Obertraun and the Sarstein.
Right on the opposite side lie the Dachstein mountains which are constantly covered by snow, also named „da Stoa“. Time for walking amounts 30 minutes.
A second walk brings you away from the alpine pasture along a marked trail to the north, Durchgangsalm – Hallstatt. Before you go down the Durchgangsalm the path turns left across a meadow up to the „Hohe Scheibe“, the Plankensteinhöhe, 1659 m. Standing here you can see the Plankensteinalm, the Dachstein mountains and the Gosaukamm. On the opposite side lies the Plassen. It is used as a salt mine in Hallstatt. It will take you 45 minutes to go there.
The „Wofeler“ and the „Leutgeb“ huts are open to the public during the summer months. You have the possibility to try delicious alpine cheese and other specialities from Gosau there.
The farmers Gamsjäger offer cabs to the Plankensteinalm. Requests can be made: 06136 8773, 0699 1158 5898; One trip there and back again costs 14 Euros per person.
