The hike which will take you about half a day time will lead past the nature reserve containing the locations Vorderer Gosausee, Gosauseelacke and Hinterer Gosausee.
You can find yourself right in the UNESCO Heritage of the World region „Hallstatt-Dachstein/Salzkammergut“ and you will discover water in its most diverse ways and manners.
Your time for the hiking trail to the Hinterer Gosausee will amount about 1.5 to 2 hours, 230 metres. You should consider gravel roads and for this reason special shoes for hiking are requested.
Journey:
From the guest house „Gosauschmied“ in the Hintertal the street leads you up an estimated 5 km right to the Gosausee. There is plenty of parking space and a nice guest house which can be used.
You will enjoy the beautiful panorama that shows the Dachstein and the Gosau glacier with the mirror picture of the Gosausee. This is the starting point for the different hiking trails around the Gosausee, to the Hinterer Gosausee, the Adamekhütte, the Dachstein and the special hiking trail around the Gosaukamm.
The walk around the Gosausee takes 1,5 hours. The road is pretty wide. For this reason buggys and wheal chairs will not have any problems to go around. If you choose to walk along the left side of the lake you will have a wonderful view of the Dachstein. In summer you can watch the young male natives of Gosau, jumping off the stone walls, right into the lake.
When you reach the end of the lake the trail will lead you to the Hinterer Gosausee straight ahead. After the first short ascent you can find the “Jagdhaus” in about 15 minutes. The path runs past the Gosausee lake. Its amount of water differs with the fallen snow or rain. Sometimes it even gets so big that it floods the whole place, even the Jagdhaus. Soon you will see the “Launigfall”. Right after that the way will get quite steep to climb and you will get to the “Luagbichl”. From this point you can enjoy a gorgeous view down to the Gosausee. As far as the high plateau is concerned there are nice woods to walk through, finding maple trees which are quite seldom for this region. After ten minutes your final destination, the Hinterer Gosausee, will lie before you, 1160 metres above sea level.
Going round the lake you could discover that the path is covered with snow from avalanches from the last winter. This can happen quite often during winter seasons with a lot of fallen snow. The last snow bits often last until July. Situated right at the Hinterer Gosausee you will find the idyllic hut “Holzmeisteralm”.
It is open to the public from Whitsun untill autumn.
You travel back to the Gosausee on the same trail eventually. You can go further on the other side of the lake, past nice streams and moss-covered stones.
If you are interested in typical Gosau specialities, produced by natives, like fresh milk you should stop at the “Klacklhütte”.
During the hot summer months the lake will warm up to 20 degress Celsius. Bathing in the cristal clear lake and having a beautiful view of the Dachstein at the same time will become an unforgotten memory.
You can rent electronic boats at the lake and the cable car brings you up to the Zwieselalm.
