Hike around the Gosaukamm

Way to Scharwandhütte, in the background the Zwieselalm

This hike can be managed leisurely in two days with a sleep over in the Hofpürgelhütte. Trained hikers could cover the trail in one day (about eight to ten hours).

If you choose to start from the Gosausee in the direction of the Steiglpass – Hofpürgelhütte the journey will take a bit longer. Furthermore this way provides the advantage of a more relaxed way back home with huts and possibilities to take a break.
Beware not to miss the last cable car down from the Zwieselalm to the Gosausee. When you come to the sector Gosausee-Hofpürglhütte you will not find any sources or huts which are open to the public.
The hiking paths are marked pretty well. Some parts can be steep and a few places are safeguarded by a rope. You will be hiking in an alpine area. For this reason a good hiking equipment and good weather are essential for your tour. You will have to consider the possibility of having to pass snow covered fields until June.

Gosaukamm cable railway: tel.: 06136 8856
Main season: Middle of June – Middle of September, first drive up at 8.15 am, last drive down at 5.20 pm
Off-peak season: Middle of September – End of October, first drive up at 8.15 am, last drive down 4.50 pm
You should start your hike very early in the morning. From the Gosausee 933 metres above the sea level, past the little hut, the way goes up steeply through the woods in the direction of the Scharwandhütte, which you reach in one hour.Half an hour further you reach the Bergsteigerkapelle. Sometimes  a group of chamois climb around in this area.
In the Gosaukamm mountains, under the mighty peaks, your journey continues through the cool “Eisgrube”. Here you will see the snow covered parts of the trail. Usually they last until summer. After the Eisgrube the path goes up through stony area to the Steiglpass. After three and a half hours you reach the highest point at 2016 metres above the sea level.

From the Steiglpass the trail goes down to the Hofpürglhütte which lies at 1705 metres above the sea level. This takes you an estimated 45 minutes. After a nice and long break the journey continues past the Sonnenhänge through the Durchgangsschlucht to the Sulzkaralm in one and a half hours. For walk to the Stuhlalm and the Theodor Körner Hütte you should plan one and a half hours time. Below the Großer and Kleiner Donnerkogel the hike ends at the transmitter of the Zwieselalm.
From the Hofpürglhütte to the Zwieselalm it takes you 4 hours.
Motivated hikers can walk down the last metres afoot without going by cable car.
