You have a perfect view of the Großer Donnerkogel with ist impressive rock faces from the Gosausee. It is nearly unbelievable that a path leads up to the peak on the west side. Experienced hikers will be able to climb to the peak in about two hours from the mountain station of the Gosaukammbahn cable railway.
The relatively short ascent asks for dizzy-free people and hikers who feel well climbing the stoney pathway. You will have to use your hands and feet fort his walk, definetely!
Please beware that the trail could be pretty slippery in case of a rainy day!
From the mountain station at 1473 metres above the sea level a wide road leads past the Gablonzerhütte and the Breininghütte up to the Törleck (transmitter) in about 15 minutes. Then the journey continues going past alpine meadows until you reach a crossover. Here you turn left and walk past big rocks and through Latschen.
You could easily meet a charmois when you are on your way during the morning hours.
Further on your way you will have to cross the hillside. The road is narrow and you have to cross a few rocky parts.
One and a half hours later you get to the memorial tablet. Going further from here will take you another half an hour. The last part of your way will end more relaxed, past alpine meadows. The peak of the Großer Donnerkogel offers enough space for a whole group of hikers.
The view down to the Gosausee, looking into the great rocks of the Gosaukamm is astonishing and unique at the same time. Down in the valley lies the lovely Gosautal. Your eyes pass the Kalmberg mountains, the skiing region Dachstein-West, the Lammertal, the Höllengebirge and the Hochkönig.
Incase of scrubbed air you can even spy the Tauern region and the Großglockner mountain.
You go back down the same way again.
